The battery poduces electrical energy through a series of chemical reactions. These reactions take place between the battery plates and the battery acid (electrolyte). The battery plates are formed from lead and lead alloys. The electrolyte is a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. The energy produced by the battery is used to power the starter. The alternator produces power to recharge the battery when the engine is running.
